STAND BY ME PURPLE CLEMATIS (GROUP3)

Clematis x 'Stand by Me' PP30556 is commonly referred to as Stand by Me bush Clematis. This Proven Winners® selection is a unique non-vining herbaceous selection with bluish-purple bell-shaped blooms in late spring with an occasional rebloom in late summer. It stands erect when young, maturing to a bush habit. Like most perennials, Stand by Me will die back to the ground in fall.

Stand by Me Clematis is deer and rabbit resistant and thrives in full sun, but will tolerate some light shade. It desires rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil for it to thrive.

Clematis Groups:
Clematis Group 1 (Early-flowering) - These varieties bloom on old wood (growth from the previous year) in early spring. They generally require no routine pruning; if they become too large or untidy, simply trim them back immediately after they finish flowering.

Clematis Group 2 (Large-flowered hybrids) - These typically produce a flush of blooms in early summer on old wood and often a second, lighter flush on new growth later in the season. Prune them lightly in early spring by removing dead or weak stems, cutting back to the highest pair of healthy buds, and optionally trimming again after the first bloom to encourage re-flowering.

Clematis Group 3 (Late-flowering) - These bloom on new wood (growth produced during the current season) in late summer or fall. They are the most forgiving to prune; cut them back hard in late winter or early spring, typically to about 6–12 inches above the ground, to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant blooms.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: This variety falls in Group 3. Plant with the crown 2-3 inches deep in well-draining soil. Mulch well to keep the roots cool. Pruning: These bloom on new growth. In late winter or very early spring, cut the entire plant back hard to 6-12 inches above the soil level. This ensures vigorous, new growth and a full flush of flowers every single year.
