MASSACHUSETTS KINNIKINICK

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi 'Massachusetts is commonly referred to as Massachusetts kinnikinnick or Bearberry. It is an outstanding extremely hardy, broadleaf evergreen groundcover that features glossy green foliage that becomes reddish gold in winter. Clusters of pale pink, bell-shaped flowers on red stems appear from mid to late spring, followed by glossy scarlet red berries in fall. A great wildlife attractant!

Massachusetts Bearberry is deer resistant and thrives in in full sun to partial shade in rich, fertile, acidic, evenly moist, well-drained soils. It can be drought tolerant once established. It is ideal for erosion control groundcover and rock gardens.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
