Zone: 8CALIFORNIA ELEPHANT EAR
Alocasia odora 'California' (often referred to as the Dwarf Upright Elephant Ear or California Elephant Ear) offers a more compact and manageable silhouette compared to its giant cousins. Reaching a mature height of approximately 3 to 4 feet, it is prized for its prolific, clumping growth habit and its ability to quickly fill in landscapes with lush, light-green foliage. The leaves are distinctively heart-shaped with slightly scalloped edges and are held stiffly upright on sturdy petioles. Because of its smaller stature and rapid offset production, it is an excellent choice for container gardening or as a medium-height tropical accent in mixed borders.
For optimal health, 'California' thrives in bright, indirect light, though it is notably more sun-tolerant than many other Alocasias and can handle some direct morning sun. It prefers a consistently moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. One of its standout features is its superior cold hardiness; it can often withstand temperatures lower than most tropical aroids, making it a reliable performer in Zone 8 and warmer. To maintain its vigorous growth, place it in a spot sheltered from heavy winds to protect the leaves from mechanical damage and provide regular fertilization during the spring and summer months.
