Acorus gramineus 'Ogon', commonly known as Golden Japanese Sweet Flag, is a vibrant, semi-evergreen perennial prized for its luminous, grass-like foliage. Unlike the tall prairie grasses, 'Ogon' is a low-growing mounding plant, typically reaching only 18 to 24 inches in height with a similar spread. Its narrow, blade-shaped leaves are variegated with bright butter-yellow and chartreuse stripes, providing a stunning "glow" in shaded or dimly lit corners of the garden. When bruised or crushed, the foliage emits a pleasant, sweet fragrance, making it a delightful choice for planting along pathways, in rock gardens, or as a colorful groundcover near water features.
Caring for Golden Variegated Sweet Flag is distinct from many ornamental grasses because it absolutely craves moisture; it is a true wetland plant that thrives in boggy soils or even shallow standing water up to an inch deep. It performs best in partial shade, as intense afternoon sun in hot climates can scorch the tips of its golden blades, though it can handle more sun in cooler regions if kept consistently wet. To maintain its neat appearance, ensure the soil never dries out completely, as drought will quickly lead to brown, crispy leaf tips.
