PRES GREVY COMMON LILAC

Syringa vulgaris 'President Grevy' is commonly referred to as President Grevy Lilac or President Grevy French Hybrid Lilac. This old favorite from 1886 still stands out for its intense spring blooms even after all these years! Buds begin dark blue opening to a lilac-blue, providing a stellar two-tone effect. Flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other beneficial pollinators, and deer pretty much leave President Grevy alone. The panicles are highly fragrant and its light green, heart-shaped leaves remain attractive through summer. When pruning, prune immediately after flowering as it will increase bloom production for the following year.

President Grevy French Hybrid Lilac thrives in full sun in rich, fertile, humus-rich, evenly moist, well-drained soils. It is ideal for mixed borders, foundations or specimen planting.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: place in a site with full sun and fertile, well-draining soil to support the production of its massive, double-blue panicles. This variety is a vigorous grower that benefits from a balanced, slow-release fertilizer applied in early spring. Because it sets its buds on old wood, ensure you do not prune in late winter or early spring; perform any necessary size control or deadheading immediately after the flowers have faded to prepare the plant for the following year.
