AFTER DARK STONECROP

Sedum 'After Dark' is a dramatic, upright stonecrop prized for its exceptionally deep foliage, which is among the darkest of any cultivar. Throughout the spring and summer, its succulent leaves maintain a rich, smoky-purple hue that intensifies to near-black when exposed to full sun. In late summer, 'After Dark' produces clusters of charcoal-black buds that open into vibrant garnet-red flowers. This striking color contrast - combined with its tidy, mounded habit - makes it a bold architectural element in any garden bed.

To maintain the best form and most intense color, plant 'After Dark' in a spot that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. It is highly adaptable and thrives in poor to average, well-drained soil; avoiding overly fertile soil is key, as too many nutrients can cause the stems to become lanky and flop. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering except during prolonged dry spells.

In the landscape, it is ideally suited for the middle of a perennial border, as a high-contrast companion in rock gardens, or as a "thriller" in large autumn containers. For maintenance, simply leave the dried seed heads for winter interest and cut the stems back to the ground in early spring as new growth begins to emerge.
