Zone: 6BOURBON CLIMBING ROSE
Rosa 'Zephirine Drouhin' is a cherished heirloom Bourbon rose, first introduced in 1868, that remains a staple in romantic gardens today. It is most famous for being a completely thornless climber, making it a "user-friendly" choice for high-traffic areas like entryways, archways, or walkways where snagging clothes or skin is a concern. The blooms are a striking deep cerise-pink with a white base and are highly celebrated for their powerful, old-rose fragrance that can scent an entire garden breeze.
Growing vigorously to heights of 10 feet, Bourbon Rose is notably one of the most shade-tolerant climbing roses available, often performing well on north-facing walls where other roses might struggle. It provides a massive, breathtaking display of semi-double flowers in late spring, followed by reliable repeat flushes through the summer and autumn. While it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in stagnant air, its ability to thrive in less-than-ideal light and its lack of thorns make it an enduring "antique" favorite for both novice and expert rosarians.

To help Zephirine Drouhin Bourbon Rose settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in a location with at least 6-8 hours of sunlight. Provide a sturdy trellis or support system immediately. Water deeply at the base. Prune in early spring. Remove any dead or damaged canes. Note on Training: The secret to a heavy bloom is horizontal training: as the plant grows, tie the long, flexible canes horizontally to your support structure rather than straight up. This forces the plant to send up vertical, flowering shoots along the entire length of the cane. Because Zephirine Drouhin Rose is completely thornless, this training process is much easier and safer compared to almost any other climbing rose.
