Zone: 5CARILLO™ RED BEARDTONGUE
Penstemon Carillo™ Red (part of the P. x mexicali series) is a compact, high-performance perennial that earned a Fleuroselect Gold Medal for its exceptional floriferousness and vibrant color. It produces a dense, upright mound of glossy, dark green, needle-like foliage that remains attractive throughout the season, serving as a base for masses of trumpet-shaped, fluorescent magenta-red flowers with bright white throats. These "foxglove-like" blooms appear in early summer and continue in waves through late summer, acting as a powerful magnet for hummingbirds and bees.
Standing only 9 to 12 inches tall, Carillo™ Red is significantly more compact than many other penstemons, making it perfect for the front of a sunny border, rock gardens, or even patio containers. It is highly valued for its heat and drought tolerance once established, though it is famously sensitive to "wet feet" during the winter; excellent drainage is non-negotiable for its survival. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9, it requires minimal maintenance beyond deadheading spent flower spikes to encourage a second flush of blooms and a tidy appearance.
