FELIX CROUSSE PEONY
Paeonia 'Felix Crousse' is a classic French heirloom herbaceous peony, introduced in 1881 and still widely considered one of the best red varieties for the home garden. This mid-to-late season bloomer produces large, bomb-style double flowers in a brilliant, carmine-red hue with a silky, violet-pink sheen on the inner petals. The blooms are exceptionally ruffled and dense, often reaching 6 inches in diameter, and emit a soft, pleasant fragrance. Reaching a height of 24 to 36 inches, it features lush, divided emerald-green foliage that serves as a sturdy, attractive backdrop for other perennials long after the spectacular floral display has ended in early summer.
To ensure 'Felix Crousse' produces its famous vibrant color, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as at least six to eight hours of direct light are required for vigorous stem growth and prolific flowering. It thrives in deep, fertile, and well-drained soil with a neutral pH; like most peonies, it is highly susceptible to root rot if left in heavy, waterlogged clay during the winter. When planting, it is vital to position the "eyes" or buds no deeper than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface, as deeper planting is the most common reason for a lack of blooms.

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Provide full sun to partial shade. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize lightly in the spring.
