Zone: 5BENIKAZE JAPANESE FOREST GRASS
Hakonechloa macra 'Beni-Kaze', which translates to "Red Wind" in Japanese, is a captivating deciduous grass known for its dramatic seasonal color shift. Unlike the golden or variegated varieties, 'Beni-Kaze' features lush, solid bright green blades throughout the spring and summer that form a gracefully cascading mound about 15 to 18 inches tall. As the temperatures drop in late summer and autumn, the foliage begins to develop striking streaks of deep red and burnt orange, eventually turning almost entirely crimson. This transition creates a "smoldering" effect in the shade garden, providing a rare and vivid fall display that mimics the changing colors of Japanese Maples.
Caring for 'Beni-Kaze' is straightforward, provided it is planted in a cool, sheltered environment that mimics a forest floor. It performs best in partial shade; while it needs a bit of filtered sunlight to trigger its intense red fall color, hot afternoon sun can scorch the delicate leaf tips. 'Beni-Kaze thrives in humus-rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil and should not be allowed to dry out completely, especially during the heat of summer. Because it is deciduous, the foliage will turn a warm tan in late winter before going dormant. Maintenance is as simple as cutting the dead blades back to the ground in early spring to make way for the fresh, green shoots of the new season.

To help Hakonechloa macra types settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in partial to full shade in rich, moisture-retentive, well-draining soil. Hakonechloa macra varieties (Japanese Forest Grass) is prized for its elegant, cascading, waterfall-like habit, making it an exceptional choice for brightening up shady woodland gardens or containers. Unlike many other grasses, Hakonechloa will scorch and lose its vibrant color if exposed to harsh, direct afternoon sun. It performs best with consistent moisture and protection from strong, drying winds. It is slow-growing and requires minimal maintenance; simply cut back the old foliage to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
