Scabiosa columbaria 'Butterfly Blue' is an award-winning perennial cherished for its prolific, lace-like flowers and exceptionally long blooming season. Reaching a tidy mature height of 24 - 30 inches with a similar spread, it produces a continuous supply of 2-inch wide, lavender-blue flowers that resemble delicate pin cushions. These nectar-rich flowers sit atop wiry stems above a low-growing mound of grey-green, deeply lobed foliage. As its name suggests, 'Butterfly Blue' is a premiere magnet for butterflies and bees, providing a reliable food source from late spring all the way until the first hard frost.
To keep 'Butterfly Blue' performing at its peak, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun and features excellent soil drainage. It is particularly sensitive to "wet feet," especially during the winter months, so amending heavy clay soils is highly recommended. It is remarkably heat-tolerant and dependable. To maximize its flower production and maintain a tidy appearance, it is essential to deadhead spent blooms regularly; this simple task will prevent it from putting energy into seed production and keep the lavender-blue "pincushions" coming all season long. In early spring, simply remove any withered foliage to make room for fresh new growth.
