BUNKER HILL CHINESE PEONY

Paeonia 'Bunker Hill' is a classic and reliable herbaceous peony celebrated for its exceptionally fragrant, large double blooms in a rich, vibrant rose-red or deep pink. The flowers are densely packed with silky, ruffled petals that often show a slight silver-tipped edge as they mature, giving the blossoms a luminous, multi-dimensional appearance. As a mid-season bloomer, it typically reaches a height of 30 to 36 inches and produces sturdy, upright stems clad in lush, dark green foliage that remains attractive throughout the summer. Because of its intense, spicy fragrance and long vase life, it has been a favorite for cut flower gardens and traditional borders for decades.

For the most prolific blooming, 'Bunker Hill' should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as at least six hours of direct light are required to support its heavy floral production. It thrives in deep, fertile, and well-drained soil with a neutral pH, and it is vital to plant the "eyes" or buds no more than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface to ensure it flowers properly in the coming years. Like many large double peonies, the massive weight of the blooms, especially after a spring rain, can cause the stems to bow, so providing a sturdy peony hoop or ring early in the spring is highly recommended. Once established, 'Bunker Hill' is incredibly long-lived and cold-hardy, but it prefers to remain undisturbed in its permanent garden home.
