PRAIRIE DROPSEED

Sporobolus heterolepis, commonly known as Prairie Dropseed, is a premier native ornamental grass prized for its elegance, fine texture, and intoxicating fragrance. This slow-growing, long-lived perennial forms a magnificent, hair-like mound of arching, emerald-green foliage that reaches 3 to 4 feet tall. In late summer, airy flower panicles emerge on slender stems, rising well above the foliage to a height of 2 to 3 feet. These delicate plumes are famous for their unique, spicy scent - often described as a mix of coriander, popcorn, or toasted nuts - that fills the air on warm late-summer evenings.

As temperatures drop in fall, the fine-textured foliage transitions into a brilliant display of golden-orange and copper tones, eventually fading to a creamy light bronze for the winter. It maintains its tight, architectural "fountain" shape even under snow, providing exceptional structure and a reliable food source for songbirds throughout the colder months.

For the most prolific blooming and the strongest golden fall color, plant Prairie Dropseed in a location that receives full sun. It is a remarkably rugged and drought-tolerant grass that thrives in average to poor, well-drained soil; once established, it is highly resistant to heat, humidity, and even heavy clay.
