Zone: 3PURPLE ROBE LOCUST
Robinia 'Purple Robe' is commonly known as Black Locust or Purple Robe Locust. It is a medium sized, deciduous tree that has an oval to upright habit with branches that are ascending and open. It is noteworthy for its attractive compound leaves and long, hanging clusters of fragrant, purple pea-like flowers that last for about 10 days in mid to late spring. They are very similar to Wisteria flowers and quite attractive to bees. Leaves emerge a bronze-red in spring, turning bronze-green and later pale yellow in fall.
The Purple Robe Locust is easy to grow and thrives in full sun in rich, moist, well-drained soils. Nearly thornless and an improvement over the Black Locust.
