RIPPLE EFFECT™ SUMMERSWEET

Ripple Effect™ Summersweet (Ripple Effect™ Clethra alnifolia 'SMNCAC' USPPAF, Can PBRAF) is a compact and exceptionally fragrant deciduous shrub that is a standout in late-summer gardens. Ripple Effect™ is prized for its unique blooming habit; it produces multiple, staggered racemes of spicy-scented white flowers that bloom successively, extending its flowering season longer than many other varieties. Its dense, dark green foliage provides a lush backdrop throughout the summer before turning golden yellow with a touch of soft orange in fall. Because it blooms in July and August when most other shrubs have finished, it is an invaluable resource for pollinators, particularly bees and butterflies.

Clethra Ripple Effect™ thrives in full sun to partial shade, though it is remarkably shade-tolerant and can even flourish in full shade - quite the rarity for flowering shrubs. It thrives in consistently moist, acidic soil and is an excellent choice for those problem areas like rain gardens or low spots with heavy clay that stay damp. While it can handle some dryness once it is established, a regular watering schedule is best. Since this variety blooms on "new wood", it is better to prune it in late winter or early spring to maintain its tidy 3-to-5-foot mounded shape and to encourage a fresh flush of fragrant summer spikes.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote new growth.
