Zone: 6PLUMBAGO
Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, commonly known as Hardy Blue Plumbago or Leadwort, is a prized groundcover known for its exceptional late-season interest and "true blue" flowers. It forms a low, spreading mat of glossy green, spoon-shaped leaves that typically reaches 9 to 12 inches in height. Starting in mid-summer and continuing until the first frost, it produces clusters of brilliant, cobalt-blue blossoms that resemble those of the tropical Plumbago. As autumn arrives, its foliage undergoes a dramatic transformation, turning a stunning shade of bronzy-red or burgundy, which provides a vivid backdrop for the final blue flowers of the season.
Plumbago is a tough and adaptable performer that is perfect for filling in gaps between larger shrubs or as a front-of-border accent. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, though it is remarkably drought-tolerant once it has established its root system. One characteristic to keep in mind is that it is often late to emerge in the spring, so it is helpful to interplant it with spring-blooming bulbs like daffodils or tulips. To keep the patch looking tidy, simply cut the woody stems back to the ground in late winter or early spring before the new growth begins to appear.

To help Ceratostigma settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil that remains moderately moist during the growing season. While adaptable, Ceratostigma performs best in full sun to partial shade - sunlight is key to encouraging the vibrant flowers and rich fall foliage color. Avoid heavy, waterlogged sites, particularly in winter, as the roots are sensitive to poor drainage. Water regularly to establish; once mature, it is moderately drought-tolerant.
