Zone: 3SPOT ON BETHLEHEM SAGE
Pulmonaria 'Spot On' is a standout spring-blooming perennial and is highly regarded for its unique color transformation; the flowers emerge as nearly orange buds before opening into a deep salmon-pink and eventually maturing to a rich, brilliant blue. This multi-colored effect is set against exceptionally ornamental foliage that features large, vibrant silver spots that often coalesce to nearly cover the dark green leaves. Reaching a height of 15 to 18 inches, it has a slightly larger and more robust presence than many older lungwort varieties, forming a dense, silver-sheened mound that remains attractive throughout the growing season.
For its ideal spot, 'Spot On' should be planted in partial to full shade where the soil remains rich and consistently moist. It is a fantastic choice for the front of a shaded border or for massing as a high-contrast groundcover under a tree canopy. It is noted for its excellent resistance to powdery mildew and its ability to handle the humidity of the Midwest better than many traditional selections. Maintenance is straightforward; simply cut back the flower stalks after they have finished blooming to highlight the decorative foliage and provide a layer of mulch to help retain the soil moisture it needs to prevent the leaves from wilting in the summer heat.
