JAN VAN LEEUWEN PEONY

Paeonia 'Jan van Leeuwen' is a quintessential Japanese-form herbaceous peony that is widely regarded as one of the most elegant white varieties ever bred. This late-season bloomer features large, cup-shaped flowers with broad, waxy, pure white guard petals that surround a massive, mounded center of narrow, bright canary-yellow staminodes. The contrast between the snowy petals and the dense golden "heart" creates a crisp, clean aesthetic that resembles a giant, sophisticated daisy. Reaching a height of approximately 32 to 36 inches, it produces a light, sweet fragrance and is supported by a lush mound of dark green, divided foliage that remains a handsome garden staple throughout the summer.

To ensure 'Jan van Leeuwen' maintains its pristine white color, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as at least six to eight hours of direct light are required for the plant to produce its striking, multi-textured flowers. It performs best in deep, fertile, and well-drained soil with a neutral pH; like most peonies, it is sensitive to "wet feet" and requires excellent drainage to prevent crown rot. When planting, it is crucial to position the "eyes" or buds no deeper than 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface to guarantee reliable flowering. Because the Japanese-style center is much lighter than a full double peony, this variety is known for its exceptional stem strength, often standing tall through spring rain without the need for staking.
