VARIEGATED LILYTURF

Liriope muscari 'Variegata', commonly known as Variegated Lilyturf, is a show-stopping evergreen perennial prized for its luminous, creamy-yellow and green striped foliage. It forms a dense, fountain-like mound of arching, strap-shaped blades that typically reach 18 to 24 inches tall. This clumping variety is an exceptional choice for brightening up shaded pathways or adding a "glowing" edge to garden borders. In late summer, it produces stiff, upright spikes of vibrant violet-purple flowers that stand out beautifully against the golden-variegated leaves, followed by dark, ornamental berries that provide interest well into the winter months.

Caring for 'Variegata' is incredibly simple, as it is one of the most adaptable and resilient plants for "tough" garden spots. It thrives in partial shade to full sun, though its yellow variegation often appears brightest when it receives a bit of dappled sunlight; in deep shade, the gold may fade to a creamy white. This plant is remarkably drought-tolerant once established and can handle a wide variety of soil types, including sandy or clay-heavy ground. Maintenance is minimal: in late winter or very early spring, simply shear or mow the foliage back to about 3 inches from the ground to remove the weathered winter growth and allow the fresh, brightly striped blades to emerge cleanly for the new season.
