Zone: 6AUTUMN FERN
Dryopteris erythrosora, the standard Autumn Fern, is a versatile and incredibly reliable evergreen fern that provides a steady backbone for any shade garden. It is best known for its unique "seasonal" color palette: the new fronds emerge in a warm coppery-bronze color before gradually maturing into a lustrous, deep forest green. This creates a beautiful multi-toned effect throughout the spring and summer as new growth pushes through the older foliage. Its stiff, leathery fronds grow in an arching, vase-like habit, offering a sturdy texture that holds up well even in the face of winter weather.
To keep the Autumn Fern thriving, place it in partial to full shade. It is a particularly adaptable species, capable of handling a variety of soil types as long as they are well-drained and rich in organic matter. While it prefers consistent moisture to look its most lush, it is one of the most drought-tolerant ferns once its root system is fully established, making it an excellent choice for woodland plantings where root competition from trees can be a challenge.
A unique feature of this species is the appearance of bright red sori (spore cases) on the undersides of the leaves, which provides an extra bit of hidden detail for the observant gardener. To maintain a tidy appearance, simply cut back any fronds that have become wind-burned or tattered at the very end of winter to make way for the next flush of bronze-colored growth.

To help Dryopteris settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in rich, humus-heavy soil that is moist but well-draining. Dryopteris prefer consistent moisture but require good drainage to prevent crown rot; unlike bog-loving ferns, they will not tolerate long periods of standing water. Mulch with organic matter to keep roots cool and retain moisture.
