Also known as Sour Gum or Tupelo, this broad pyramidal to oval shaped cultivar has a spring flush that shows deep red new growth turning to green in summer. Fall brings tints of burnt orange-yellow to purplish red. The bark has a unique alligator-like pattern in shades of dark gray to black. Birds love its small ornamental black fruit. It thrives in moist conditions in full sun.
