BELLE DE NANCY LILAC

Syringa vulgaris 'Belle de Nancy' is commonly referred to as Belle de Nancy French Hybrid Lilac. It is a hardy French Hybrid variety with heart-shaped, green foliage and highly fragrant, double pink flowers that have a white center. It is a favorite cut flower. Flowers also attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.

Belle de Nancy Lilac thrives in full sun in sandy, loamy, evenly moist, well-drained soils. When pruning, prune immediately after flowering. It is ideal as a specimen or along borders as a fragrant and colorful screen.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: site this beautiful double-flowered cultivar in full sun with well-draining, neutral soil to ensure the best color development in its pink-tinted blooms. Because this variety can be susceptible to powdery mildew during humid Ohio summers, it is essential to provide adequate spacing to promote excellent air circulation. Water consistently until the root system is established and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. As this is a classic vulgaris variety, it sets its buds on old wood, so do not prune in late winter or early spring; perform any necessary thinning or shaping immediately after the flowers fade in late spring.
