ALBA COMMON LILAC

Syringa vulgaris 'Alba' is commonly referred to as Common White Lilac. It is an old fashioned, hardy, vigorous deciduous shrub with sweetly fragrant, white panicle flowers through spring. Dark green foliage with an upright, vase-shaped habit makes it ideal as a hedge or screen.

Alba Lilac is very cold hardy and thrives in full sun in rich, evenly moist, well-drained soils. It is ideal for borders, foundations or any sunny spot where you can smell its sweet aroma.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: site this classic cultivar in full sun with rich, well-draining soil to support its heavy, fragrant white panicles. This variety can be susceptible to mildew if air circulation is poor, so provide adequate spacing between plants. Water regularly during the first year and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins. As this is a traditional vulgaris lilac that sets its buds on old wood, do not prune in late winter or early spring; perform any necessary thinning or rejuvenation pruning immediately after the flowers fade in late spring.
