MELLOW YELLOW WILLOW LEAF SPIREA

Spiraea thunbergii 'Ogon' is better known as 'Mellow Yellow' Spirea. It is a fantastic shrub for adding vibrant color and fine texture to any landscape. It's a low-maintenance, multi-season plant that offers a brilliant display of color throughout the year. In early spring, before the leaves emerge, the graceful, arching branches are covered in a profusion of delicate white flowers, creating a breathtaking 'bridal wreath' effect. As the season progresses, the foliage takes center stage, emerging in a stunning, bright lemon-yellow. The color mellows to a chartreuse-green in summer and then explodes into a fiery orange-and-pink display in the fall.

Spirea 'Mellow Yellow' is easy to grow and quite adaptable. It thrives in full sun in a wide range of soils as long as they are well-drained. It can be drought tolerant once established. 'Mellow Yellow' Spirea brings a touch of long-lasting, mellow serenity to your garden with changing colors throughout the season.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun to partial shade, as full sun is preferred for best flowering and foliage color, in well-draining soil. Water regularly until established; once mature, this variety is relatively drought-tolerant. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize annually with a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Prune sparingly and only immediately after flowering to maintain shape; avoid pruning in late winter or early spring, as this will remove the following season's flower buds.
