SWAMP CHESTNUT OAK
Quercus michauxii, commonly known as the Swamp Chestnut Oak, is a majestic deciduous tree prized for its stately, rounded crown and deeply furrowed, light gray bark. Native to the bottomlands of the southeastern United States, it is distinguished by its large, green leaves with wavy, chestnut-like margins that turn a rich, warm orange-red in the autumn. Beyond its ornamental beauty, Swamp Chestnut Oak is a vital powerhouse for local ecosystems, producing exceptionally large, sweet acorns, often referred to as "cow oak" acorns, that serve as a preferred food source for a wide variety of wildlife, from deer to wild turkeys.
For the most successful growth, the ideal location for a Swamp Chestnut Oak is a site with full sun and moist, acidic, well-draining soil. While it is naturally adapted to floodplains and can tolerate brief periods of saturated ground, it is surprisingly versatile and can thrive in standard garden settings provided it isn't subjected to extreme, prolonged drought. It thrives with deep, regular watering during its first few growing seasons to establish a robust root system. Once mature, it requires very little maintenance, though applying a layer of organic mulch around the base will help mimic its natural forest floor habitat and retain essential soil moisture.

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
