Zone: 5BISSETS BAMBOO
Phyllostachys bissetii, commonly known as Bisset's Bamboo, is renowned for being one of the hardiest and most vigorous species in the genus. This running bamboo is prized for its dense, upright habit and its ability to create an impenetrable evergreen screen or windbreak in a relatively short amount of time. The culms (canes) emerge a deep, dark green and typically maintain this rich color as they mature, though they may take on a slight yellowish tint if exposed to intense, direct sunlight over many years. The foliage is equally impressive, consisting of thick, lush, dark green leaves that remain vibrant even through harsh winters that might cause other bamboo species to lose their luster.
The ideal spot for Bisset's Bamboo is a location that receives full sun to partial shade, though it is notably more shade-tolerant than many of its relatives. It thrives in moist, fertile, and well-drained soil; however, it is highly adaptable to a variety of soil types, including heavier clay. Because this is a running bamboo, its primary care requirement is effective containment; it is essential to install a high-quality root barrier (at least 24 to 30 inches deep) or utilize regular trenching to manage its spread. To maintain a clean and architectural look, older or thin culms should be thinned out at ground level in late winter.
