Zone: 5STRAWBERRIES AND CREAM CREEPING PHLOX
Phlox subulata 'Strawberries and Cream' is a unique hybrid that represents a breakthrough in moss phlox breeding, developed by Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Unlike many standard varieties, 'Strawberries and Cream' is a cross between Phlox subulata and the western species Phlox kelseyi, which imparts superior vigor and a fascinating "color-changing" bloom cycle. In mid-spring, 'Strawberries and Cream' Phlox is covered in flowers that open nearly white with a soft violet-pink blush. As the blooms age, they deepen into a clear, bubblegum pink, creating a showy two-toned effect across the plant for several weeks. Its refined, mounded habit and resistance to fading make it a standout choice for those looking for something beyond the traditional creeping phlox palette.
'Strawberries and Cream' Phlox thrives in full sun and sharply drained soil. Thanks to its P. kelseyi parentage, it is notably more tolerant of alkaline soil (higher pH) and salt than many other creeping varieties, making it an excellent problem-solver for parkways or seaside gardens. For general care, it is best to provide moderate moisture during its first season to establish a strong root system, after which it becomes quite drought-tolerant. A light shearing immediately after the flowers fade in early summer will help maintain its tidy shape and promote a dense, deep green carpet of foliage that persists through the summer.
