Zone: 4YELLOW TREE PEONY
Paeonia suffruticosa 'Yellow' (often represented by the celebrated cultivar 'High Noon') is a rare jewel among tree peonies, prized for its luminous, lemon-gold color that is difficult to find in other peony types. This woody shrub produces large, semi-double blooms that can reach up to 6 to 8 inches in diameter, featuring a delicate, crepe-like texture and a sweet, citrusy fragrance. Unlike many other tree peonies, 'Yellow' is known for its ability to occasionally re-bloom in late summer if conditions are ideal, extending the season of its sunny display.
As a tree peony, 'Yellow' develops a permanent woody structure that reaches a height and spread of 4 to 5 feet, making it a substantial architectural presence in the landscape. It thrives best in partial shade, specifically in a spot that offers protection from the intense afternoon sun to prevent the yellow petals from fading. It requires deep, fertile, and exceptionally well-drained soil; because it is a slow-growing "heirloom" plant, it may take 2 to 3 years to fully establish, but once settled, it can live for decades as a low-maintenance garden treasure.
