Zone: 4PINK TREE PEONY
Paeonia suffruticosa 'Pink' is a classic representative of the tree peony group, distinguished by its permanent woody stems that do not die back to the ground in winter. This deciduous shrub produces breathtaking, massive blooms that can reach up to 6 to 10 inches in diameter, featuring a range of pink shades from soft blush to deep rose. The flowers are often semi-double or double with a delicate, "crepe paper" texture and a central boss of golden-yellow stamens, typically emitting a light, sweet fragrance that signals the arrival of mid-spring. Unlike herbaceous peonies, 'Pink' matures into a substantial shrub reaching 4 to 5 feet in height and width, providing a structural, architectural element to the garden year-round.
It thrives in dappled to partial shade, which helps protect the large, delicate petals from wilting in the hot afternoon sun, and requires deep, fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral pH. Because it is a woody plant, it is vital to never prune it to the ground; maintenance is limited to removing dead wood in early spring. These are exceptionally long-lived "heirloom" plants, often thriving for 50 years or more once they have survived their slow, 2-to-3-year establishment period.
