BLACK BEAUTY PEONY
Paeonia 'Black Beauty' is a mesmerizing herbaceous peony known for having some of the darkest, most velvety petals in the genus. This mid-season bloomer produces large, semi-double to double flowers in a sultry, deep maroon-red that can appear nearly black in certain lighting or during the cool of the morning. The center of the bloom is often punctuated by a contrasting cluster of bright golden-yellow stamens, which adds a dramatic "glow" to the dark floral cup. Its foliage is equally impressive, featuring lush, divided dark green leaves that maintain a clean, bushy appearance throughout the summer, reaching a sturdy height of approximately 24 to 30 inches.
To achieve the richest color and most abundant blooms, 'Black Beauty' should be planted in a location that receives full sun, though in particularly hot climates, a bit of light afternoon shade can help prevent the dark petals from "crisping" or fading too quickly. It requires deep, fertile, and exceptionally well-drained soil; like all peonies, it will not tolerate "wet feet" over the winter, which can lead to crown rot. When planting, ensure the red buds or "eyes" are positioned no more than 2 inches below the soil surface to guarantee future flowering. Because of its heavy, multi-petaled blooms, it is wise to provide a peony hoop or supportive staking in early spring to keep the dark, dramatic flowers from nodding toward the ground after a heavy rain.
