LITTLE MISS MAIDEN GRASS

Miscanthus sinensis 'Little Miss' is a stunning, compact ornamental grass that acts as a "mood ring" for the garden, transitioning through a spectacular range of colors. Little Miss forms a tidy, upright mound that typically reaches 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. While it emerges in spring as a fresh, soft green, it quickly begins to develop intense carmine-red and purple tones on the leaf tips by early summer. By autumn, the entire plant transforms into a glowing, fiery reddish-purple specimen, topped with shimmering silvery-pink flower plumes that catch the low autumn sun beautifully.

Caring for 'Little Miss' is remarkably easy, and its smaller stature makes it a fantastic choice for modern landscapes or large patio containers. It performs best in full sun, which is essential for triggering the deep red pigmentation in the foliage; in too much shade, 'Little Miss' will remain mostly green and may lose its sturdy, upright habit. It is drought-tolerant once established and is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including heavy clay, provided it is well-drained. Because it is deciduous, it will turn a warm tan in late winter. Maintenance is a simple once-a-year task: in late winter or very early spring, cut the entire clump back to about 3-4 inches from the ground to make way for the vibrant new growth.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun with well-draining soil. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Prune back in the fall to maintain shape and encourage new growth.
