Zone: 3PURPLE DRAGON DEADNETTLE
Lamium maculatum 'Purple Dragon' is more commonly known as is a vigorous and highly ornamental perennial groundcover celebrated for its striking, high-contrast display of foliage and bloom. The heart-shaped leaves are largely covered in a brilliant, frosty silvery-white with defined green margins, creating a dazzling, light-reflective carpet in shaded areas. Its standout feature is its exceptionally large, hooded, deep magenta-purple flowers - often described as 'grape-lollipop-purple' - which appear profusely in terminal spikes from late spring and continue to bloom sporadically throughout the summer and into the fall. This cultivar quickly spreads to form a dense mat, reaching a low height of 6-9 inches and a spread of 12-18 inches, effectively smothering weeds and providing long-lasting color from spring to frost.
'Purple Dragon' Spotted Deadnettle is an excellent choice for difficult areas, being adaptable, fast-growing, and semi-evergreen in milder climates. It thrives best in partial shade to full shade and prefers average, consistently moist, well-drained soil, though it is one of the best for tolerating dry shade once established. Its durability and low-maintenance nature - combined with its proven resistance to deer and rabbits - make it ideal for mass plantings beneath trees, edging shady borders, or as a contrasting "spiller" in containers.
