Zone: 3COMMON MILKWEED
Asclepias syriaca, commonly known as common milkweed, is a highly adaptable native root perennial renowned for its strong fragrance and crucial ecological value across North America. Growing 2 to 3 feet tall on sturdy, unbranched stems with broad, leathery, dark green leaves, Asclepias syriaca produces large, globe-like clusters of sweet-scented, pinkish-purple flowers throughout midsummer. The nectar-rich blooms are an absolute magnet for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while serving as a primary host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars. Additionally, its bitter, milky sap provides natural deer and rabbit resistance, making it an excellent candidate for meadow restorations, naturalized natural areas, and pollinator gardens where wildlife browsing is high.
Common Milkweed thrives in full sun for maximum bloom quality and strong, upright growth, though it tolerates light afternoon shade. It grows easily in a wide range of soils, from average to poor, and once established, it is remarkably drought tolerant with good tolerance to soil salinity and roadway salt runoff. Because it spreads enthusiastically via underground rhizomes, it is best given ample room to naturalize rather than planted in formal or tight spaces.

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant it in well-draining soil with full sun. Water it regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season.
