Aegopodium podagraria 'Variegatum', commonly known as Snow-on-the-Mountain or Variegated Bishop's Weed, is a vigorous and incredibly resilient groundcover prized for its ability to brighten up the darkest corners of the landscape. It features attractive, divided foliage with soft green centers and crisp, creamy-white margins. Growing to a uniform height of 15 to 18 inches, it forms a dense, leafy carpet that is topped in early summer by airy umbels of small white flowers, similar in appearance to Queen Anne's Lace.
Snow-on-the-Mountain is a "problem solver" for challenging areas where little else will grow, such as dry shade or steep banks. It thrives in partial to full shade and is remarkably adaptable to almost any soil type, including poor or compacted earth. However, because it spreads rapidly via aggressive underground rhizomes, it is best used in contained areas or spots where it can roam freely without overtaking more delicate perennials. To keep its foliage looking fresh and to prevent self-seeding, many gardeners choose to mow the patch on a high setting after the flowers fade, which encourages a flush of new, brightly variegated growth.
