Zone: 4ITOH SEQUESTERED SUNSHINE TREE PEONY
Paeonia 'Sequestered Sunshine' is a radiant Itoh Hybrid that lives up to its name by brightening the garden with large, single to semi-double blooms in a clear, brilliant canary-yellow. The flowers, which can reach 5 to 7 inches across, feature a central cluster of showy golden-yellow stamens and occasional soft red flares at the base of the petals. Unlike many older yellow varieties that can look washed out, this hybrid maintains its saturated, "neon" yellow color even in bright light, and it emits a light, refreshing fragrance that adds to its cheerful presence in the mid-to-late spring garden.
Reaching a height of about 3 feet, 'Sequestered Sunshine' forms a robust, mounded shrub with exceptionally sturdy stems that do not require staking, even when loaded with blossoms. It features the classic, deeply divided dark green foliage typical of Itohs, which remains lush and disease-resistant well into the autumn months. To ensure the best floral display, plant 'Sequestered Sunshine' in full sun to partial shade in rich, well-drained soil. In late autumn, follow standard Itoh care by pruning the stems back to about 4 to 6 inches above the ground, leaving the woody base to support next year's growth.
