ROMAN RED SAGE

Salvia 'Roman Red' is a breakthrough interspecific hybrid that offers a vibrant, true-red color rarely seen in such a sturdy, heat-tolerant form. Reaching a mature height of 28 to 34 inches with a similar spread, it features a densely branched, upright habit and dark green, aromatic foliage. The large, nectar-filled flower spikes are a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies, providing a continuous display of intense color from late spring until the first frost. Its exceptional vigor and uniform growth make it a top-tier choice for "thriller" components in large patio containers or as a high-impact focal point in sunny landscape beds.

To keep 'Roman Red' performing at its peak, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun and has well-drained soil. It is notably heat and humidity tolerant, making it a reliable performer during the peak of summer, though it prefers consistent moisture to maintain its lush appearance and prolific blooming. While it is technically a tender perennial (hardy in USDA Zones 9 - 11), it is most commonly grown as a vigorous annual in cooler climates. To encourage a tidy shape and more flower spikes, you can lightly shear the plant or pinch back the stems mid-season, though it is naturally designed to bloom continuously without heavy deadheading.
