MONA LISA ORIENTAL LILY
Lilium orientalis 'Mona Lisa' is a fragrant, compact Oriental lily variety, celebrated for its suitability in containers and as a foreground plant in borders. Unlike the taller Oriental types, 'Mona Lisa' is a dwarf hybrid, reaching a modest 24 to 30 inches in height, making its large, beautiful blooms accessible and less prone to flopping. The flowers are outward-facing, soft pink with deep rose centers, dark speckles, and gently recurved petals, appearing in mid to late summer (USDA Zones 3-9). The highly scented blooms are a fantastic choice for attracting pollinators and creating exquisite indoor arrangements, and the plant is generally easy to grow, showing good hardiness and tolerance for a range of soils provided they are well-drained.
For successful growth, plant in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade, ensuring the soil is fertile and consistently moist but never soggy. Oriental lilies prefer their roots to be cool, so applying a layer of mulch or underplanting with low-growing perennials is beneficial. To maintain the health of the bulb, remove spent flowers (deadhead) after blooming but do not cut the stem or foliage until it has fully yellowed and died back in the fall; this foliage is vital for replenishing the bulb's energy for the next season's flowers.
