MRS MOON BETHLEHEM SAGE
Pulmonaria saccharata 'Mrs. Moon' is a classic, time-tested perennial that remains a staple in the shade garden. It is beloved for its charming, color-shifting blooms that emerge as bright pink buds before maturing into a soft violet-blue, often displaying both colors simultaneously in early spring. The foliage is equally striking, featuring long, lance-shaped green leaves that are heavily dappled with prominent, silvery-white spots. Reaching a height of about 12 to 15 inches with a spreading habit, it forms a lush, silver-flecked carpet that provides excellent textural interest long after the flowers have faded.
For its ideal spot, 'Mrs. Moon' flourishes in partial to full shade, especially in areas where it can stay cool during the peak of summer. It requires rich, humus-retaining soil that is consistently moist but well-drained; if the soil dries out too much, the foliage may wilt or become susceptible to powdery mildew. It is a fantastic choice for naturalizing under deciduous trees or along shaded walkways where its spotted leaves can brighten up the ground plane. Maintenance is minimal, primarily involving the removal of spent flower stalks and the occasional thinning of older leaves to encourage a fresh flush of the ornamental, spotted foliage.
