BLUE SPRUCE STONECROP
Sedum reflexum 'Blue Spruce' is a popular, low-growing sedum groundcover known for its needle-like foliage that mimics the appearance of a blue spruce conifer. The succulent, glaucous-blue leaves are arranged in spiraled whorls along trailing stems, creating a fine-textured carpet that stays attractive throughout the year. In early to mid-summer, it is topped with vibrant, star-shaped yellow flowers that provide a brilliant contrast against the cool blue foliage. As temperatures drop in late autumn and winter, the tips of the foliage often take on attractive reddish or orange tints, adding seasonal interest to the winter landscape.
Sedum 'Blue Spruce' thrives in a location that receives full sun to very light shade, which ensures the foliage remains dense and maintains its signature blue color. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established and performs best in sandy or rocky, well-drained soil; it should not be planted in areas where water tends to collect. In the landscape, 'Blue Spruce' is an ideal choice for filling gaps in rock gardens, draping over stone walls, or serving as a colorful, low-maintenance border along walkways. Maintenance is minimal-simply trim back the flowering stems after they fade if a tidier appearance is desired, and clear away any winter debris in early spring.
