EAST FRIESLAND MEADOW SAGE
Salvia 'East Friesland' is a classic and reliable perennial valued for its tidy, compact habit and prolific flowering. It produces numerous upright spikes of deep violet-purple flowers that create a dense carpet of color in early summer. Its aromatic foliage is a deep grayish-green, forming a sturdy mound that stays attractive even when the plant is not in bloom. As a long-standing favorite in the garden, it is one of the earliest salvias to flower, providing a crucial early-season nectar source for bees and butterflies.
The ideal spot for Salvia 'East Friesland' is in full sun with sharp, well-draining soil, as it thrives in bright light and can suffer in overly wet or heavy ground. Because it maintains a very manageable height of 15 to 18 inches, it is perfectly suited for the front or middle of a perennial border, where it can be planted in groups for a high-impact color block. Once the initial flush of flowers begins to fade, a quick shearing back of the spent spikes will often encourage a second, lighter bloom cycle in late summer. It is exceptionally hardy and drought-tolerant once established, making it a staple for low-maintenance landscapes and rock gardens.
