NORTH HILLS CREEPING PHLOX
Phlox subulata 'North Hills' is a striking and highly popular creeping phlox, frequently chosen for its exceptionally crisp and clean appearance. It produces a dense, moss-like carpet of needle-green foliage that becomes completely smothered in bright, pure white flowers in mid-to-late spring. What sets 'North Hills' apart is the prominent, star-shaped violet-purple eye at the center of each bloom, creating a high-contrast "twinkling" effect that stands out brilliantly against the white petals. Its vigorous yet tidy spreading habit makes it an ideal choice for large-scale groundcover, cascading over stone walls, or adding a sophisticated touch to rock gardens.
To ensure 'North Hills' maintains its vibrant display, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, which is necessary for the most prolific flowering and to keep the foliage carpet dense and healthy. It thrives in lean, gritty, and exceptionally well-drained soil; like most subulata types, it prefers average, gritty soil over rich ground, which can lead to leggy or sparse growth. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and stands up well to the heat and salt spray typical of roadside or sidewalk plantings. After the spring flowering has finished, a light shearing of the foliage will help maintain its compact, mounded shape and encourage a fresh flush of green growth that remains attractive throughout the winter months.
