Zone: 5LONGIN RUSSIAN SAGE
Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Longin' is a sophisticated, upright Russian Sage known for its remarkably straight, stiff stems and refined texture. Unlike the wilder, more sprawling species, 'Longin' maintains a formal, vertical silhouette that rarely flops, even in wind-prone areas. Its silver-white stems are clothed in narrow, serrated, silvery-grey foliage that emits a pleasant herbal fragrance when crushed. Starting in mid-summer, the plant is crowned with long, slender spikes of vibrant lavender-blue flowers that create a soft, hazy cloud of color lasting until the first hard frost.
Reaching a stately height of 3-4 feet, 'Longin' is a "bulletproof" perennial for USDA zones 5-9 and is exceptionally well-suited for the back of a sunny border or as a low-maintenance hedge. It is a champion of heat, drought, and salt tolerance, thriving in lean, sharply drained soil where many other perennials might struggle. Because of its woody structure and aromatic oils, it is virtually deer and rabbit resistant, providing a reliable, architectural backdrop that acts as a high-activity hub for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds all season long.
