SHIRLEY TEMPLE PEONY

Paeonia 'Shirley Temple' is a timeless heirloom herbaceous peony, named after the iconic child star of the 1930s and 40s. This early-to-midseason variety is famous for its large, fully double blooms that reach up to 8 inches in diameter and offer a captivating color transformation; they emerge as a delicate, soft blush-pink and gradually fade to a pristine, creamy ivory-white as they mature. The flowers are exceptionally ruffled and "cloud-like," emitting a sweet, mild fragrance that makes them a top choice for romantic cut flower arrangements and wedding bouquets.

Reaching a mature height of 30 to 36 inches, 'Shirley Temple' forms a robust, bushy mound of glossy, deep green foliage that remains attractive throughout the growing season until the first frost. While the stems are relatively strong, the sheer size and weight of the double blossoms, especially when holding rainwater, usually necessitate the use of peony rings or staking to keep them from bowing. It thrives in full sun to partial shade in rich, well-drained soil; like most peonies, it is remarkably long-lived and deer-resistant, preferring to stay undisturbed in the garden once established.
