PETITE DELIGHT BEE BALM
Monarda 'Petite Delight' is a celebrated dwarf hybrid that brings a soft, romantic touch to the garden with its unique lavender-rose blossoms. Reaching a compact height of 12 to 15 inches, it forms a neat, rounded mound of glossy, dark green foliage that emits a delightful spicy-mint fragrance when crushed. 'Petite Delight' is particularly valued for its crinkled leaf texture and its ability to act as a primary nectar source for hummingbirds and butterflies during its mid-summer bloom. Unlike more aggressive cultivars, 'Petite Delight' is a well-behaved clumper, making it a perfect fit for the edges of walkways or mixed perennial beds where you want color without the risk of the plant spreading uncontrollably.
To see this cultivar at its best, place it in an ideal spot with full sun to partial shade and rich, organic soil that stays medium-to-wet. This plant is particularly fond of moisture and should never be allowed to dry out completely, as drought stress can make it susceptible to health issues. While it was the first dwarf Monarda bred for high resistance to powdery mildew, it still thrives best with plenty of room for air circulation to keep the foliage dry. For long-term care, provide a layer of mulch to retain root moisture, deadhead spent blooms to encourage a tidy appearance, and divide the clumps every three years in early spring to maintain its vigor.
