ADAGIO MAIDEN GRASS

Miscanthus sinensis 'Adagio', commonly known as Adagio Maiden Grass, is a "dwarf" cultivar prized for its refined, compact habit and heavy flower production. Unlike its larger relatives that can become unruly, 'Adagio' forms a tidy, symmetrical fountain of very narrow, silvery-green blades that typically reaches 3 to 4 feet tall (about 5 feet when in bloom). In late summer, it produces spectacular, fan-shaped flower plumes that emerge a shimmering bronze-pink before maturing into creamy, wind-swept white tufts that persist well into winter. In autumn, the fine-textured foliage takes on a beautiful golden-yellow to orange hue, providing a warm "glow" to the late-season garden.

Caring for 'Adagio' is remarkably simple, as it is one of the sturdiest and drought-tolerant ornamental grasses available. It performs most brilliantly in full sun, which is essential for maintaining its upright shape and ensuring a massive flush of flowers; in too much shade, the plant may "flop" or fail to bloom. Adagio is highly adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including heavy clay, provided it is well-drained and not sitting in stagnant water.

Planting Tips

To help Miscanthus sinensis types settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in average, well-draining soil. For best performance and full plume production, ensure they receive ample sunlight; shade may lead to flopping or reduced flowering. They are adaptable to a variety of soil types and become quite drought-tolerant once established. These grasses are vigorous, clump-forming growers, so provide adequate spacing at planting to accommodate their mature size. Cut the foliage back to the ground in late winter or early spring to refresh the plant for the upcoming season.
