BUTTERNUT
Commonly referred to as Butternut or White Walnut, this large tree is a valued native American tree that is sadly becoming rare in the wild. The Butternut can reach 40-60 ft in height with a spread of 30-50 ft. Over a span of decades it may reach 100 ft if no harm comes to it. Female flowers give way to clusters of edible oval nuts encased in hairy husks. Nuts mature in fall, but become rancid quickly.
