GOLDEN CHAIN GIANT REED GRASS
Arundo donax 'Golden Chain', often referred to as Golden Chain Giant Reed, is a striking, more compact cultivar of the towering giant reed species. Known for its bold architectural impact, this ornamental grass features wide, arching blades elegantly striped with bright gold and deep green. While the standard species can reach unruly heights, 'Golden Chain' is much more manageable, typically topping out at 5 to 6 feet tall. It creates a dense, bamboo-like screen that is perfect for adding a tropical flair to temperate gardens or acting as a dramatic, variegated backdrop for shorter perennials.
Care for 'Golden Chain' Giant Reed Grass is centered around providing full sun to ensure the golden variegation remains vibrant and the stems stay strong. It is a highly adaptable plant that thrives in a wide range of soils, though it particularly flourishes in moist, well-drained areas and can even tolerate occasional flooding. Unlike some more delicate grasses, this reed is notably heat-tolerant and resistant to most pests and deer. To maintain its tidy appearance, cut the canes back to the ground in late winter or early spring before the new shoots emerge from the rhizomes, as the previous year's growth will turn brown and dormant in colder climates.

To help Arundo 'Golden Chain' settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in rich, consistently moist soil. 'Golden Chain' is a dramatic, fast-growing giant reed that features striking gold-variegated foliage, making it a stunning, large-scale focal point or privacy screen. Because of its vigorous growth habit and significant height, ensure it is planted in an area where it has ample space to establish, as it will spread; it is ideally suited for low-lying areas, pond edges, or damp sites that stay moist throughout the season. Cut the canes back to the ground in late winter to encourage fresh, colorful growth each year.
