SAMURAI TOAD LILY
Tricyrtis formosana 'Samurai' is a distinct cultivar of the Toad Lily, celebrated for its striking variegated foliage and late-season floral display. It features arching stems lined with attractive, wide leaves that are green in the center and edged with a creamy-yellow to gold margin. As summer fades into autumn, it produces a profusion of exotic, orchid-like flowers that are heavily spotted with purple and white tones. Its unique, architectural habit and color variation make it a high-impact choice for the shade garden, providing interest even before the flowers emerge in the late season.
For best growth, 'Samurai' thrives in USDA Zones 5-9, and requires a spot in part shade to full shade, protected from the harsh afternoon sun which can scorch its delicate foliage. The ideal soil is consistently moist, fertile, and rich in organic matter; Toad Lilies do not tolerate dry conditions well and should be watered regularly, especially during the heat of summer. Because of its relatively compact size, it works beautifully in woodland settings or shaded borders. Keep an eye out for slugs and snails, which can sometimes be attracted to the tender foliage, and mulch the base to help maintain soil moisture and cool root temperatures.
