ITOH SCARLET HEAVEN TREE PEONY
Paeonia 'Scarlet Heaven' is a rare and breathtaking Itoh Hybrid that brings a true, deep red - rarely seen in intersectional peonies - to the garden. This early-to-midseason bloomer features large, single to semi-double flowers that can reach 7 to 9 inches across, displaying a rich, velvety scarlet hue that glows against a center of bright golden-yellow stamens. Unlike many red peonies that lean toward pink or burgundy, 'Scarlet Heaven' maintains a remarkably pure, blood-red pigment that resists fading even in the sun. The plant forms a sturdy, upright mound of lush, deeply divided dark green foliage that remains highly ornamental and disease-resistant throughout the entire growing season.
Reaching a height of approximately 24 to 36 inches, 'Scarlet Heaven' is celebrated for its exceptional stem strength, easily supporting its massive, outward-facing blooms without the need for staking or hoops. For the best performance, 'Scarlet Heaven' should be planted in full sun to partial shade in rich, well-drained soil; while it loves the light, some afternoon shade in hotter climates can help the intense red petals last longer. Like other Itoh hybrids, it is incredibly hardy and combines the exotic floral appeal of a tree peony with the easy maintenance of an herbaceous type. In late autumn, simply prune the stems back to about 4 to 6 inches above the ground to ensure a vigorous return the following spring.
