Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun to partial shade; it performs best in sunny locations where stem color will be most vibrant. It adapts well to most soil types, including clay, provided it isn't constantly waterlogged. Pruning: To maintain the plant's compact form and ensure the brightest stem color, perform rejuvenation pruning (coppicing) in late winter. Cut one-third to one-half of the oldest stems to the ground each year. This encourages new, vibrant yellow-orange to red stems for the following winter season.
